Chéri Samba dans la collection Jean Pigozzi – Musée Maillol, Paris

The Musée Maillol is devoting a major retrospective to the Congolese artist Chéri Samba - a leading figure of the "popular painting" artistic movement in Kinshasa  and undisputedly the most famous African painter of his generation. With more than 50 paintings from the Jean Pigozzi collection, the exhibition curated by Elisabeth Whitelaw and Jerome Neutres presents a journey through 40 years of creation by Chéri Samba. It explores several "Sambaïan" themes: the self-portrait as a central element in his painting, the Congo and Africa, geopolitics and the environment, art history and finally women, a theme with which the museum is entering into an unprecedented dialogue with the work of Maillol.
