Masterpieces Hair And Now Contemporary African art and historical Nigerian hairstyles are the subjects of two art shows in Houston. The first, at the very large and extremely aggressive Museum of Fine Arts, is "African Art Now: Masterpieces From the Jean Pigozzi Collection," with 200 works by 33 artists from 15 sub-Saharan nations. It's up through May 8. Call (713) 639-7300 or visit www.mfah.org. The hairdos at the Blaffer Gallery at the University of Houston show the elaborate, often historical, designs that were created by Nigerian women in the 1950s and '60s. Since he first saw these tonsorial intricacies, photographer J.D. 'Okhai Ojeikere has been documenting the sculptural styles. Through March 5. Call (713) 743-9530 or visit www.blaffergallery.org. |
