A younger generation of Malian photographers has picked up where Sidibé, who died last year, and Keïta, who died in 2001, left off. Oumou Diarra in her series “Les Chasseuses de Bazin,” examines the aspirational desires and consumerism of young women who go to great lengths to dress in expensive traditional fabrics worn by famous musicians, much the way American or European youths might take their fashion cues from music videos, even if they can’t afford the lavish clothes and jewelry they see on screen. Fatoumata Diabaté created a mobile studio with a nostalgic time-capsule theme that became an open-air installation and traveling performance piece.

“A lot of these younger photographers have looked at Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta and are finding ways to interpret them in new ways,” said Bisi Silva, the founder and artistic director of the Center for Contemporary Art, Lagos in Nigeria, and one of the magazine issue’s curators. “They are still talking about [...]
