If an artists identity is viewed through his work then Richard Onyangos collections reveal him to the wider world. The style, the strength, the romance, the heartache, and the curiosity that contribute to Onyangos creative being are reflected in his varied and poignant collections.
Onyango first gained international acclaim with his series, Drosie and Me a collection of paintings focused around his love affair with the powerful Drosie and the Salambo Night.
Onyango has documented the transit and shipping industry in East Africa through his works, painted historic disasters, expanded the Drosie theme into a Large Ladies collection, penned his own short story, The Life and Times of Richard Onyango, and showcased in Milan, Paris, and Monaco.
Now, Onyangos never-before exhibited works feature Barack Obama, Grandma Sarah, Nelson Mandela, Princess Diana, and Michael Jackson his acrylic brush strokes capturing the magnitude of each person, each entity.
The show opens on Sunday 7th August, 2011 at Gallery Watatu, Lonrho House, Nairobi starting at 3pm. It runs until 21st August, 2011.
The artist in Onyango does not remain on the canvas as artistry exudes from his every pore. From the fiber of his clothes to the fiber of his being, Onyango is art. This is a man who wears black jeans embroidered with gold trimming, electric neon coloured silk tops, and silver studded belts with gun holsters, like they are a second skin.
There is no doubt Onyango walks the walk. Self-made clothes by a self-made artist who has captivated audiences with his ability to give new life to old realities and create new realities from his dreams. The artist and the artwork will once again garner the attention of art lovers and investors as Onyango reveals another layer of himself through his latest works.
