There may be much talk these days about the globalisation of the contemporary art world, but art from Africa continues to be woefully under-represented. And despite its all-encompassing title, Louis Vuitton Foundation’s Art/Afrique, Le Nouvel Atelier can’t hope to show the scope and variety of a continent made up of 54 different countries.

Yet although this three-show survey gives a very partial – and some would say flawed – view of African art, it is nonetheless very welcome. It makes no claims to be comprehensive and within each of its distinct strands there is terrific work from artists that we often don’t see enough of, and even more from those that we barely – if ever – see at all...
